🏞️ The Legacy of Sigiriya

Sigiriya’s story dates back to the 5th century AD, during the reign of King Kashyapa, who built his royal palace on top of this 200-meter-high rock. The fortress was surrounded by elaborate gardens, water features, and protective walls — many of which still exist today.

After King Kashyapa’s fall, the site became a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. Today, Sigiriya stands as one of the best-preserved examples of ancient city planning and engineering in Asia.

1. Lion’s Paw Entrance

At the base of the summit stairs, you’ll find two gigantic lion’s paws carved out of stone — the last remains of a massive lion statue that once guarded the entrance. It's from this lion that Sigiriya gets its name: “Sinha-giriya” (Lion Rock).

2. Mirror Wall

Once polished so highly that the king could see his reflection, the Mirror Wall still retains ancient graffiti from visitors dating back over 1,000 years. These poetic inscriptions give us a glimpse into the minds of Sigiriya’s earliest admirers.

3. Sigiriya Frescoes

Midway up the rock, you’ll find the famous frescoes of Sigiriya maidens — graceful, colorful paintings of celestial women, believed to be either royal courtiers or goddesses. These murals are a stunning example of ancient Sri Lankan art.

4. Water Gardens & Terraces

At the base of the rock lie symmetrical water gardens and terraced landscapes designed with advanced hydraulic systems. These beautifully organized gardens were way ahead of their time in terms of engineering.

5. The Summit Ruins

Once you reach the top after a steep climb, you’ll find the ruins of King Kashyapa’s palace. The view from the summit is nothing short of spectacular — offering 360-degree views of the jungle, hills, and surrounding plains.
